Translated from French. The third edition of the Animazur festival takes over the Cineum in Cannes La Bocca on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October: previews from age 3, a short film session put to the public vote, the return of the Kids Jury, masterclasses and workshops to step behind the screen, as part of the P’tits Cannes à You festival.

After the MIPCOM projectors shut down on Thursday, Cannes remains a film city this weekend, but at child height. The Animazur festival returns for a third edition at the Cineum in Cannes La Bocca, on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October. Two days devoted to animated film in all its forms, between screenings, encounters and hands-on practice, as part of the P’tits Cannes à You young audience festival, which opened across the city this Friday.

According to the programmes published by Kidiklik and Récré Nice, the weekend begins as early as this Friday 16 October at 8 pm with an opening night around the film “Le Corset”, by Louis Clichy, screened at the Cineum. The heart of the festival then beats on Saturday and Sunday, with a run of previews designed for families.

Previews from age 3

On Saturday, the youngest open the ball at 10.30 am with “Le merveilleux hiver de Tom le Chat” (The Wonderful Winter of Tom the Cat), a preview from age 3, followed at 1.15 pm by “Le mystère de Lucy Lost”, by Olivier Clert, then at 3.10 pm by “Shaun the Sheep, the Beast of Halloween”. The day also includes the special session of the official short film selection, at the end of which the audience votes for its favourite film, and ends in the evening with “Carmen, l’oiseau rebelle”, by Sébastien Laudenbach, preceded by an animation quiz, then “Peleliu, guerre au paradis”, by Goro Kuji.

On Sunday, the programme resumes at 10.30 am with “Le Noël d’Ernest et Célestine” (The Christmas of Ernest and Celestine), a preview, before “Doraemon: the Undersea Castle” at 1.15 pm, “L’île des souvenirs” at 3.20 pm and, at 5.20 pm, “Muyi, la légende du village des femmes”, preceded by a presentation of the work of Studio La Cachette and Studio Duetto. This year the short film section marks the return of the Jury Kids, a children’s jury tasked with discovering the works in competition.

Draw, handle, understand

Animazur does more than screen films. On the Cineum ground floor, the stands take children behind the image: live animation, an introduction to stop-motion with puppets, a video game demonstration and workshops on graphics tablets, with the announced presence of the École Brassart and Manga Paradise. The Kidiklik Côte d’Azur creative zone runs a cinema poster making workshop all weekend, from 11 am to 6.30 pm.

On Saturday, the Histoires Vivantes workshops introduce the zoetrope, which reveals the principle of the illusion of movement, and drawing on slides, then projected onto the big screen. On Sunday, from 2.30 to 5.30 pm, the “Pioche ton film” workshop by L’Arbre à Bulles, from Mougins, invites young directors to invent a scene from three cards drawn at random: a character, a place and a surprise element.

The Cineum lists a full price of 8 euros, a 6 euro price for students and under-16s, and a three film pack at 18 euros. The detailed times for each screening and bookings are published on the website of the cinema, the festival’s organiser.
